To Shop in Óbidos

As you amble down the main street in Óbidos, the Rua Direita, there will be plenty of easily accessible shops. Many display souvenirs on racks outfront but you will find, once inside, there are interesting handicrafts unique to the area. It is not uncommon to see a potter or painter at work in their shops as many artists from all over the world, call Óbidos home. Try to venture into  Igreja de São Tiago, a centuries old church that has been converted into a bookstore. It is a great place to spend time looking for the perfect souvenir. Don't forget the shops just outside the Porta da Vila or main gain of the village. There are a host of specialty shops as you approach the main gate of the village that are very inviting and often overlooked by the day-tripping crowd. Any excuse to pass through Porta da Vila multiple times is worth the walk. The gate is unique in the world and it is hard to take in the beauty in every detail the first time you enter the village.
