São Martinho do Porto

Sao Martinho do Porto Beach.

The stunning bay of São Martino do Porto is one of the undoubted highlights of Portugal’s Silver coast. Founded in the thirteenth century by monks from the nearby Monastery of Santa Maria in Alcobaça, it retains a resident population of around 5000 people. Despite being a fishing village for most of its existence, São Martino has attracted tourists from all over Portugal for more than a hundred years, including the Portuguese royal family. Both tourists and fishermen benefit from the same remarkable natural feature of the bay, the “barras” which protect the shoreline from the relentless pounding of Atlantic waves. They have produced a perfectly formed, scallop shaped bay, which is sheltered from the ocean. This geographical quirk means that you can enjoy tranquil, blue water which is amongst the warmest on Portugal’s west coast. The beach is one of many in the area that have been awarded a Blue Flag for quality. The golden sands and shallow gradient into the calm water make it ideal for children to play safely while you relax in the warmth of the radiant Portuguese sun.

São Martino village is situated on the north east part of the bay. Its beautiful, cobbled streets are home to a wide selection of bars and restaurants which have taken full advantage of the spectacular views and idyllic setting. Of course seafood is a speciality here, with restaurants serving fish freshly caught from the bay and beyond. Those seeking an authentic Portuguese eating experience should try the Cataplana which is a delicious seafood stew made with tomatoes and onions. Other traditional foods are available, including Piri Piri chicken, but there is a wealth of choice for the discerning diner, with Swiss cuisine at the Royal Marina and Italian style cooking at the Portobello being just two of our favoured options. You don’t need to eat in a restaurant to enjoy the local cuisine. Local shops and the village market offer fresh, high quality produce for you to prepare in the comfort of your holiday home. We strongly recommend you try the locally produced cold meats and cheeses and since you are on holiday, please spend some time getting acquainted with Portugal’s fine wines and spirits. Vinho Verde (‘green wine’) from the north of Portugal is the ideal aperitif or an excellent match with the splendid seafood served round the bay. After your delicious meal why not indulge in some Aguardente, fine brandy from the Lourinhã appellation just 50km south of São Martino.

We believe the beauty of São Martino do Porto bay is unrivalled in this magnificent stretch of rugged Atlantic coastline, but we encourage you to find out for yourself. The surrounding towns and villages also have award winning beaches and their own unique charms. Nazaré to the north of São Martino is blessed with over 20km of incredible golden sands and a wonderful waterpark which provides lots of fun for the whole family. For more information about Nazaré please see our visual guide.

Salir do Porto is a tiny village on the southwest of São Martino bay. It is famed for its epic dunes which are perfect for sand sledging. You can also discover some delightful Renaissance churches. Further south along the coast is the gorgeous village of Foz do Arelho which is situated by the breathtaking Óbidos Lagoon. The sand and scenery here is truly exceptional and bathers are spoilt for choice between the pleasant, still waters of the lagoon and the energetic, unruly waves of the Atlantic. If big waves are what you want, then Peniche is only a little further down the coast. Home to several Blue Flag beaches, surfers flock here to experience “Supertubos”, one of the best waves in Europe and one of the few that produces a genuine barrel. It is a regular stop on the ASP World Tour and you can enjoy the Rip Curl Pro Portugal competition in the autumn.

Golf is the other really popular sport in the area and there are several top class courses within 40 minutes drive of São Martino do Porto which attract players from all over the world. Perhaps the most famous is Praia d’el Rey which has been lavished with accolades for its amazing course design and fantastic vistas. It has been ranked as high as the 13th best course in Europe by Golf World Magazine and is a true five star destination for enthusiasts and professionals alike. The other championship course nearby is the Golden Eagle near Rio Maior. The fabulous forests and lush countryside of this inland course provides a stark contrast to the panoramic ocean views of Praia d’el Rey where some of the fairways are parallel to the shoreline. A relative newcomer to the local golf scene, Bom Sucesso has quickly garnered a superb reputation for quality and style. Located near the lovely medieval town of Óbidos, it has fabulous views of the striking lagoon and the Atlantic coastline beyond.
