About the area
Despite Portugal being one of Europe’s most sought after holiday destinations, it is only recently that visitors have discovered the undoubted appeal of the Costa Prata (Silver Coast). With huge stretches of incredible sandy beaches covering the length of the Portuguese Silver Coast, its blossoming popularity is unsurprising.
The Silver Coast features everything you need for the perfect holiday. Please take some time out to enjoy the spectacular natural landscapes or the delightful Portuguese towns and villages that have remained unsullied by the incursions of the modern world. The Portuguese have every right to be proud of their efforts to preserve their rich cultural heritage and share it with international guests.
The weather on the Silver Coast is close to ideal. In the summer the temperature is around 27C, but that is tempered by cooling winds coming off the Atlantic. In winter the average drops to around 17C, which is one of the highest in Europe.
This stretch of Atlantic coastline has long been revered by the surfing community for its outstanding waves. Peniche is home to “supertubos” and the largest wave ever surfed reached 90 meters high near the charming fishing village of Nazaré. Nestled in between these two towns lies beautiful Sao Martinho do Porto. Protected from the Atlantic by a naturally formed, shell shaped bay, this delightful resort town offers white sand and calm blue waters to a small but ever growing number of sun seekers. The cobbled streets that surround the bay are home to a splendid selection of bars, cafes and restaurants that specialise in the freshest seafood and the warmest of welcomes.
We can’t think of any reason why you would want to leave Sao Martinho, but it is an excellent base from which to explore the Silver Coast. It’s proximity to the A8 motorway makes it easy to explore by car and there is lots to see and do. International visitors flock to the exceptional Praia D'El Rey golf course which has been rated as one of continental Europe’s best courses and it’s only 40km away. Among the many tourist destinations in the area, we recommend the stunning Obidos Lagoon which is only 10km and is home to a lovely nature reserve, excellent water sports and some outstanding scenery.
