This is a beautiful old 'Centenary' house over 3 floors on the walls of Obidos with a romantic story to tell.

The house is at the heart of the Medieval Óbidos Town backing onto the walls on the outer side.

One hundred years ago this house used to belong to a very wealthy and locally known landlord from a very traditional family. All properties from this family were painted in pink!

Until today this is the only house allowed to be painted in pink in Óbidos! All other properties are painted in white according to the local rules that are now in place.

The house 'Casa Da Cerca' used to be the home for the Lord's mistress. He visited his lover regularly and arrived by horse from his family house which was a nearby farm (Quinta das Janelas). To avoid been seen by the local people he ordered his employees to build a small path up the hill to the house, away from the main street. That path still exists today, covered with cobblestones. You can see it finishing at the View point (Belvedere) by the house. At that time the ground floor of the house was for the animals and people would live upstairs.

The property retains a romantic charm with its glowing pink walls that contrast with the white buildings that surround it.

The property has 2 bedrooms and a double sofa bed in the lounge so it can sleep 5 comfortably. The 2 bedrooms have 3 single beds in total and both are en-suite. One of the en-suites has a bath with shower over, WC and basin and the other has a shower cubical, WC and basin. There is an additional bathroom on the ground floor with shower cubical.

The sunny and spacious living room has a private terrace outside for dining and sun bathing on the sun loungers. There is a BBQ and umbrella for guests use.

Inside there are two comfortable sofas and a television, an extendable dining table for up to 8 people and a contemporary kitchen. Should you need it there are also 3 oil filled radiators.

How to get there

Obidos is just off the A8 which runs almost all the way to Lisbon. The drive from Lisbon airport will take you about 50 minutes (75kms).

There is also a good bus service at 100 metres away from the property with buses running on an hourly basis on season to Lisbon and other cities.

There is also a train station 2 km away (Obidos train station).

About the area

There is so much to see and visit in the area that you are spoilt for choice. Obidos is certainly one of the jewels of the region.

We strongly recommend that you to book a day or two to explore the castle and walk the castle walls plus browse the cobbled alleyways steeped in history.

The town itself has a very romantic story to tell as it was a gift to the bride of the King of Portugal.

Enjoy a taste of the excellent, traditional 'Ginjinha d'Obidos' which is a fortified wine and lose yourself in the many good restaurants in the town and surrounding area. Your nearest bar is "A Ilustre Casa De Ramiro", just a 2 min walk away and there are many restaurants dotted all around.

For all budgets you'll enjoy some great Portuguese food in the local restaurants. Visit “Tasca Torta”; "A Casa Das Senhoras Rainhas"; "o Caldeirão"; "Pousada do Castelo"; "A Ilustre Casa de Ramiro"; "Poço dos Sabores"; "Mãe D'Água"; "Tribeca" and many others...

There are also many festivals held in Obidos which have become famous. The Portuguese travel for miles to these as do many other nationalities more recently. For example you can visit during the following celebrations:

Medieval Market

In July, visit the Obidos medieval market, and go back in time. Surrounded by its high town walls, Obidos is the ideal setting for hundreds of extras and actors, fully dressed in medieval costumes, who animate the town’s streets, as they portray noblemen, beggars, mule-drivers, jugglers, musicians, jesters and dancers. Most of the entertainment takes place next to the castle, which will be the location of jousting tournaments, on horse and on foot, medieval dinners and the market, where everything is sold from medieval costumes to traditional home-made medical remedies.

Vila Natal

In December the Óbidos Christmas Event is popular. Visit then and you can take a ride on the Merry-go-Round, have a drink at the Ice Bar, skate on our Ice Rink and slip down the Toboggan Slide. Visit Santa’s House and his Toy Factory, as well as other entertainment.

International Chocolate Festival

Chocolate is a magical word that takes on a special meaning in Obidos in Feb-March. The International Chocolate Festival is one of the biggest and most important events organised in Óbidos.  Every year over 200 thousand visitors come to Óbidos for the sole purpose of enjoying of the world's most popular element. Besides trying different kinds of chocolates and desserts, visitors can sign up for cooking courses and watch as national and international professionals and amateurs compete for the many different prizes promoted during these 12 days.

Holy Week Celebrations

Records of Holy Week celebrations in Óbidos go back to the 17th century. This Easter event has been one of the main tourist attractions to this historic  town since early nineteen hundredths presenting some the most impressive religious ceremonies in Western Portugal. Besides the different religious manifestations (masses and processions), there is a complete cultural programme with children's activities, conferences, exhibitions and concerts also complete the programme.

Óbidos also has a public pool with excellent facilities for sports and swimming competitions and training.

Outside Obidos a must visit is to the blue Obidos Lagoon.  If you like cycling you can go all of the way around the lagoon by bike. There is a good cycle path and there are footpaths along virtually all the banks from Foz do Arelho beach to Bom Sucesso beach.

South of Óbidos there’s Peniche and Baleal and to the north there is São Martinho do Porto and Nazaré. From any of these places enjoy a great day out and plenty of great seafood.

Also nearby is the Buddha Eden - 'Garden of Peace', a Zen garden which is highly recommended.

Other ideas for days out include:

Bom Sucesso beach, 15 kms

Praia D’el Rey beach (Vale de Janelas), 16 kms

Foz do Arelho beach, 18 kms
