How to get there
Flying to Lisbon Airport is recommended if you’re coming from outside Portugal as it is an easy drive along the A8 taking an hour to Foz Do Arelho.
Alternatively you can fly to Oporto (2.5 hour drive) or Faro (3.5 hour drive).
For Lisbon, you can take the 10.23am Eurostar from London to Paris and the 15.50 TGV service to Irún on the Spanish border, which connects with the 22.00 overnight Sud Express to Lisbon, which arrives at 11.03am the following day. The cheapest return fare is about £209. Book through Spanish Rail (020 7725 7063) and please check as timings may well have changed.
From Lisbon airport by car
Hire a car from the airport if you are intending to use a car for your holiday. We will send you detailed instructions for how to get to Foz Do Arelho. The journey is about an hour.
Note: You will come across some road tolls. You must stop at them all! Do not go through the green lane as this is for cars that have pre-paid. When you get to the first one just touch the silver button and a card will come out. Keep that card until you get to the next one where you will need to stop again and pay the attendant. The first toll payment is quite a long way from where you pick up the card and will be about 5 Euros. The second one should be about 2 Euros so check you have enough cash on you.
About the area
Foz Do Arelho is home to the famous Obidos Lagoon where it meets the Atlantic. Its beauty and the wildlife found along the lagoon (including pink flamingos) means it is now a Natural Heritage site.
But Foz Do Arelho isn’t just about the lagoon. It is a renowned surfing area and there is now an array of beach/ surf bars along the coast line. Walk along the shore to the fish restaurants, cafes and water sports facilities.
